>Key responsibilities • Conducting research and preparing briefings on policies and regulations relevant to climate change mitigation and the energy transition in Japan, particularly on the decarbonisation of Japan’s corporate and financial and high-emitting sectors. The intern will receive regular feedback from line manager and colleagues, which will help them to improve their skills and knowledge. • Preparing case summaries concerning climate and environmental litigation in Japan • Attending a number of internal meetings and, from time to time, attending external meetings, seminars and events. • Occasionally preparing or reviewing high quality English to Japanese and/or Japanese to English translations • Any other duties as may be reasonably required of this role, including support for projects in relation to other Asian jurisdictions Although you will be mainly supporting the work of the Tokyo Office, you might be required occasionally to provide ad hoc support to other programmes or offices.
>Education and training • Bachelor’s degree in law, political science, environmental science, business (essential) • Postgraduate degree or equivalent experience in law, sustainability, environmental science, business or a similar relevant discipline (desirable) Experience and knowledge • Experience undertaking legal research and analysis, as well as drafting of high quality briefs, in an academic or professional setting (essential) • Knowledge of fundamental notions of environmental, corporate and/or energy laws and regulations (essential) • Interest in and/or understanding of Japanese legal, political, economic or energy issues (essential) • Experience or knowledge of environmental, climate justice and/or energy transition issues (desirable) • Experience of working in a legal / policy environment and/or a not-for-profit organisation (desirable).

>Internship purpose ClientEarth is seeking an enthusiastic intern to join our Tokyo Office, where you will have the opportunity to work with ClientEarth’s Energy Systems, Asia team, with a strong focus on Japan. This internship will enable you to learn directly how environmental issues can be tackled through legal approaches. You will join our staff in their regular work and will be given full support in developing the skills needed to thrive in a professional environment. You will have the opportunity to develop various skills needed in a legal organisation and will receive constructive feedback on your work from experienced legal professionals.
>Background ClientEarth is a group of international legal experts on climate, energy and the environment. We use the law in partnership with governments, the private sector and the public to address climate change, capture the opportunities of the low carbon transition and protect nature. We have built a global team of energy, corporate and financial law experts specialising in climate risk and decarbonisation across nine offices in Europe, China, Japan and the United States – providing the legal framework and tools for the private sector to lead on climate action. We are helping to strengthen corporate climate governance and embed climate change in investment, regulatory and policy decisions around the world. ClientEarth in Japan is embedded within Japan’s social, political, economic and cultural context and is using the law to support accelerated government and private sector leadership on climate change. The Tokyo office is bringing together lawyers with backgrounds in energy, corporate, financial and environmental law, as well as other professionals with backgrounds in climate change and communications.
>Working relationships In this internship you will be managed by our Lead of Energy Systems, Asia, Raphaël Soffer. Raphaël Soffer collaborates with civil society, regulators, and the private sector to facilitate the transition to a net-zero economy. Previously, he worked as a lawyer for international law firms, focusing on the development of energy and infrastructure projects. Beyond closely collaborating with our team in Tokyo, you will also have the opportunity to work closely with colleagues based in other locations, including Washington D.C., London, Brussels and Singapore.
